These hats define the period in many ways and are instantly recognizable as 17th Century. Generally made of felt, most gentlemen and middle class civilians would wear then for best dress. There is also evidence that knitted versions in the same shape existed, perhaps for the poorer folk.

Colours vary but black and grey would dominate. A hat band, of leather or of ribbon was generally placed around the crown and could be of any colour or material.
