Description
The Soviet Union started to receive Matilda II tanks from Britain in late 1941 as part of the Lend Lease program. They eventually received 918 of the 1084 Matilda tanks sent (166 were lost during shipping). The Soviet Matildas first saw action in the Battle of Moscow (2 October 1941 to 7 January 1942), became fairly common during 1942, and saw limited use in 1943 and into early 1944.
The heavy armour of the Matilda was appreciated by the Soviets as it was comparable to that of the KV-1 heavy tank, while sporting a 2 pdr (40mm) gun. A CS (Close Support) version was also developed armed with a 3” howitzer capable of firing high explosive and smoke.
