The Ultramarines are one of the most storied Space Marine chapters in the Imperium. During the Great Crusades they were the largest, most powerful, and best organised of all the Legions. Kept from Terra during the Horus Heresy by the treachery of Horus, the Ultramarines were the strongest force post Heresy. Their Primarch, Roboute Guilliman is renowned to this day as the foremost tactician and organisational mind in the galaxy, second only to the Emperor Himself. Truly, where most Space Marines are warriors, the Ultramarines are soldiers.After the Horus Heresy, Roboute Guilliman was the one who wrote the great Codex Astartes, the tome that reorganised the Legions. It was the crimes of the Heresy that showed Guilliman that no commander could be allowed to control the unmitigated power of a Space Marine Legion. Therefore, the existing Legions would be broken down into smaller chapters of only 1000 Space Marines. The Codex is also the greatest collection of tactical insights in the entire galaxy, and many chapters will not make war without consulting it’s hallowed pages. The Ultramarines, then, are very much in the model of their Primarch. They run countless theoretical exercises before battle, and so can respond perfectly to whatever battlefield situation occurs; they have already preplanned for every eventuality, always bringing the perfect tool for the job. They have a reputation, as a result, for being cold, bloodless soldiers, but they are Space Marines, and when their blood is up they will bring the wrath of Macragge down on the foe.The Ultramarines have experienced great joy recently, as their long lost Primarch has returned at the birth of the 42nd Millenium and the Era of the Dark Imperium. Following the Horus Heresy, all of the surviving loyalist Primarchs were lost or vanished one by one. Guilliman was wounded unto death and placed in stasis in the hope that one day his wounds could be healed. This miracle, long looked for, has happened. The Avenging Son has risen. The Ultramarines, alone of the loyalist chapters, march behind their Primarch once more. Guilliman has committed to widescale reform of the Imperium’s long hidebound organisations, and his rising has relit the guttering fires of the Imperium. He has launched the Indomitus Crusade, and brought the Pirimaris Space Marines to the fight, rejuvenating the battered and broken chapters and bringing them reinforcements. Things have never been darker for the Imperium, split in twain, with half their territory cut off behind the Cicatrix Maladictum. Yet the Avenging Son has risen, and he has brought new purpose to the Imperium. In all of this, his sons of Ultramar march behind him in perfect step. The Ultramarines are reunited with their Primarch, and the darkness quakes.  The Ultramarines are perfect for anyone who wants a balanced, even force, with many different units of different kinds. They’re also perfect for anyone who wants the ability to react quickly to changing battlefield situations.
