Soviet forces, including the Naval Brigades, benefited from enormous amounts of indirect fire support from the ‘god of war’ – their long-range artillery. With truly stunning numbers of gun and rocket batteries on hand, the Red Army could call down a rain of fire to support their advances or prevent enemy breakthroughs. Similarly, they enjoyed excellent close air support, courtesy of the legendary IL-2 ‘Sturmovik’, a truly lethal aircraft designed exclusively for low-level strikes.
