The Blood Angels are the noblest of Space Marines, their Primarch Sanguinius widely acknowledged as the fairest of the Primarchs, as noble in appearance as he was in spirit. The Blood Angels, of all the Adeptus Astartes, value artistic pursuits almost as much as war, they are skilled painters, sculptors, and writers. They are inhumanely beautiful and noble in character. But like so much in the universe of Warhammer 40,000, their surface nobility is not what it appears.

The Blood Angels struggle with the Flaw, some quirk of their gene seed that leads them to the Red Thirst, a berserker rage that can overtake them in battle, and lead them to rip out the throats of the foe and drink their blood. The names of the Blood Angel’s Successor Chapters are indicative of greater savagery than even this, the Flesh Tearers and the Blood Drinkers, for instance. This has led to the Blood Angels being notably more close combat focused in their tactical doctrine than most other loyalist chapters, with greater precedence given to close range firepower and brutal melee assaults.

Over time, the Flaw can lead to an even greater issue: The Black Rage. During the Horus Heresy, ten thousand years ago, the Primarch Sanguinius was struck down by the traitor Primarch Horus. For unknown reasons, this brutal act of kinslaying echoed down through the millennia and appears to have altered the geneseed of the Blood Angels themselves.

Sometimes in battle, or on the eve of battle, a Blood Angel will begin to act strangely, muttering in otherworldly tongues. The real world is lost to them, their eyes see only the battlements of the Imperial Palace, ten thousand years ago. They believe themselves to be the Primarch Sanguinius himself, and see all around them as the troops of the traitors attacking them. They will lash out brutally, attacking all those around them, even their own battle brothers, believing themselves to be defending the walls of Terra.

These brothers are forcibly restrained by their comrades and held separate for fear of the damage they can do. In battle, they are unleashed as the Death Company, carefully kept far from other Imperial forces, frothing berserkers who charge headlong into enemy lines. The kindest thing the Blood Angels can do for these madmen is to grant them death in battle. However there have been numerous instances, carefully suppressed at great cost in sadness to the Chapter, of the Death Company turning on Astra Militarum, on Space Marines, even on civilians.

The number of those brothers taken by the Black Rage is increasing year on year, and some fear for the very future of the Blood Angels. Their Librarians and Apothecaries, known as Sanguinary Priests, desperately seek a solution to their brother’s madness before the Flaw can destroy them. Only one soul in the history of the Chapter has conquered the Black Rage with his sanity intact, their Chief Librarian Mephiston, and at a terrible cost.

In these darkest days, with the Great Rift splitting the universe and the Imperium under worse threat than ever before, the Blood Angels fight for their sanity and their honour. While the Blood Angels have access to the same options as their fellow Space Marines, they are more focused on melee, and are a terrifying threat should they get close enough. The Death Company are one of the most feared forces in the galaxy, posthuman berserkers who can shrug off wounds that would kill a normal Space Marine, leading the charge into enemy lines.
