The Thousand Sons are the servants of Tzeentch, the Changer of the Ways, the most mysterious and enigmatic of all the Chaos gods. Theirs is a story of tragedy, of the corruption of those most loyal, a salutary lesson of the dangers of learning too much and delving too deeply into knowledge that should be forbidden. The Thousand Sons were always one of the smallest legions during the Great Crusades, but they had an unusually high proportion of psykers among their ranks. Their primarch, Magnus the Red, was one of the most powerful psykers in the galaxy, likely only exceeded in raw strength by this father, the Emperor Himself. Just before the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, Magnus learned of Horus’ treachery and attempted to send a warning to the Emperor. To do this, Magnus turned to sorcery most foul and psyk-art most dark. His message burst through the wards around the Imperial Palace, but in doing so destroyed the Emperor’s most precious work, a scientific marvel that would have helped quiet the warp and destroy Chaos forever.The message ignored in the wake of this destruction, the Emperor sent the Space Wolves and His Custodians and Sisters of Silence to censure the Thousand Sons and bring them to Terra to face judgement. Horus, ever the schemer, twisted this message and instead commanded this task force to destroy the Thousand Sons utterly. This was near accomplished, Leman Russ broke Magnus’ back and his Legion was near annihilated. The glass pyramids of Prospero were burned and eons of secret knowledge lost forever. At the moment of his near death, Magnus transported the remnants of his legion to deep within the Eye of Terror, saving their lives at the cost of their souls. Left with no choice, the Thousand Sons allied with Horus. However, it became apparent that a flaw in the Thousand Sons geneseed was causing them to mutate and devolve hideously. In an attempt to reverse this, Ahriman, the First Librarian of the legion, conducted a dark spell known as the Rubric of Ahriman. This spell succeeded…partially. Those Thousand Sons who were psykers were spared, saved from the flesh change forever, but those who were not psychically empowered became dust, forever floating in their armour, unable to think, feel, or react other than to carry out orders. Tzeentch rejoiced to see the Thousand Sons so changed, and became their patron, gifting them many secrets, lies, and truths from the depths of the Warp itself. Their knowledge has grown ever more over the millennia, as has their psychic might. They have never forgotten their humbling at the hands of the Space Wolves, and the vicious hatred between these two foes has grown ever deeper as the years have worn on. Today, the Thousand Sons are sorcerers supreme, laying plots, plans, and schemes that are mind bending in their complexity, hiding secrets that would flay the mind of any mortal who knew them.
